Trinamool Wins Violence-Hit Bengal Rural Polls, BJP Gains But Far 2nd
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) was victorious in the West Bengal panchayat elections, taking the majority of seats across all three levels of the rural local government. The results were announced in Kolkata. The TMC was successful in winning 2,552 of the 3,317 gramme panchayats, 232 of the panchayat samitis, and 12 of the 20 zilla parishads. Only 212 gramme panchayats, 7 panchayat samitis, and no zilla parishads were won by the BJP, placing them in a distant second place.
There are still certain results that need to be looked at.
“TMC is the only option in rural areas of Bengal. I would like to express my gratitude to the people for the love, affection, and support they have shown for the TMC. “This election has proven that only TMC resides in the heart of the people of the state,” Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated in a post on Facebook after the results of the poll were announced.
The process of tallying votes cast in yesterday’s panchayat elections got underway early in the morning. There are about 74,000 seats up for grabs, including 63,229 seats for the gramme panchayat, 9,730 seats for the panchayat samiti, and 928 seats for the zilla parishad.
On the day of the elections, which were supposed to serve as a popularity test for Trinamool supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in advance of the elections for the Lok Sabha in 2024, there was widespread violence.
The re-voting that took place on Monday was once again disrupted by violence in a number of voting booths, which led to the deaths of 15 individuals. During the voting process, there were several charges of electoral fraud, booth capturing, and multiple reports of electoral irregularities and voter suppression, which led to the re-voting that took place in 696 different voting booths.
Yesterday morning, explosives were detonated close to a counting centre in Murshidabad, while in Howrah, the police had to use batons to clear a mob before they could continue their work.
The Trinamool Congress party has been accused by the opposition BJP of engaging in “desperate attempts to loot votes” by excluding opposition observers from accessing counting centres.
“TMC goons are making a last ditch effort to steal the elections by preventing counting agents and candidates of the BJP and other opposition political parties from entering counting stations. This is a desperate attempt to steal the polls. They are being prevented from coming towards the venue, and bombs are being hurled in an effort to scare the counting agents,” the leader of the opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, was reported as saying by the news agency PTI.
The Trinamool Congress has asserted that sixty percent of the victims who were slain in election-related violence were either workers or supporters for their party.

Abhishek Banerjee, a representative of the Trinamool Congress, responded to charges that the party manipulated the results of the election by saying, “Even a malicious campaign with baseless propaganda to malign the AITC State Govt in WB couldn’t sway the voters!”
“Grateful to the people for converting the opposition’s ‘No Vote To Mamata’ campaign into ‘Now Vote For Mamata’,” he continued.
The disappointment that the combined opposition of the BJP, CPIM, and INC must be feeling must pale in compared to the sadness their friends from mainstream media must be experiencing.
Even a hostile campaign filled with unfounded propaganda to smear the AITC State Government in WB couldn’t convince the people to change their minds! (1/2)
As a result of the widespread violence and claims of tampering with ballot boxes, the Governor of West Bengal, CV Ananda Bose, was compelled to file a report with the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah. Mr. Bose also cautioned that those responsible for the violence will face severe consequences.
