Dhruv Rathee: threat to the Country| Swati Maliwal Case| BareLaw

There are many Indian women not less than Swati Maliwal, a two-time member of the legislative assembly from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has recently been threatened with rape and death. They said those threats were because of the video of the YouTuber Dhruv Rathee. This video is based on an assault case in which Maliwal was a victim, and an aide of Delhi’s Chief Minister is accused; nevertheless, she comes out to be portrayed negatively.

Maliwal says that rather than presenting her point of view, Rathee manipulated the video and included her side of the story only to discredit her by pointing out discrepancies between her version of the story and the CCTV camera footage. Following Rathee’s humiliating actions against her, Maliwal stated that her followers have since threatened her in the same manner.

In her allegations, Maliwal accuses some AAP leaders of trying to discredit her and the circumstances in which she was forced to drop the complaint. She then tried to contact Rathee to appeal for her side of the story, but she never got a response from him.

Starting by doing political videos on their YouTube channel, Dhruv Rathee has always been someone who could split opinions. Most of his videos are generally biased when he is doing political content. Even though Rathee has a strong audience that enjoys watching him make sensible and sharp observations and commentaries, there are controversies on whether he prefers to be partly prejudiced and tends to filter specific facts.

This occurrence highlights the power social media and other forms of online content have, and poses questions regarding the roles such actors assume when discussing such matters. No wonder it is high time that people come forward and realise the severity of cyberbullying and the harm it can cause so that the advisable use of the internet and media can be promoted and followed.
