Chief Justice Speaks On PM’s Ganesh Puja Visit Row, Days Before Retirement
I am aware that no such topics are being discussed in such meetings. The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, has said this in the context of the massive political row over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to his home for Ganesh Puja. In response to a query at the Loksattta annual lecture, the Chief Justice said it is a practice for Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of high courts to maintain close contact with one another through regular meetings.
“People think why the meetings.” Our political system is much more mature than the way in which there’s a great measure of respect paid to the judiciary, even among the political class. It is known. The state and the judiciary’s budgets are separate entities. This is not for judges. New court buildings and new residences for judges in districts. We need Chief Justice and Chief Minister’s meetings for this,” he said.
He said he had earlier been — and Chief Justice of — Allahabad High Court. Then they go to the Chief Minister’s house when the Chief Justice is appointed.’ The Chief Minister proceeds to the house of the Chief Justice. Within these meetings, you have had a set agenda. So, 10 are taking place in the state, what is about infra, what is about the budget? The Chief Minutes tell us what are the priorities for these projects. Couldn’t you have met for this? “If this is on letters, it will never be completed.”
“The political system is quite mature.” At no time is the Chief Minister ever involved in the fact of a pending case. The Chief Minister and Chief Justice meet each other on August 14 and on January 26 (a wedding or mourning), which does not affect judicial work. What deals are being done? People ask. He said it’s just part of a robust dialogue.
A major political row had broken out over images of the Prime Minister visiting the Chief Justice’s residence and participating in the Ganesh Puja, with a section of the Opposition asking whether such meetings created doubts.
A leader from Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut had proposed that the Chief Justice should take out of a case to do with the factional contest between Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde).
It is Ganpati festival, see,” says ‘Look’. How many houses has the Prime Minister been in so far? I don’t have the information. In Delhi, many places celebrate the Ganesh festival, but the Prime Minister did perform Aarti alongside the Chief Justice herself at the Prime Minister’s residence. If the custodians of the Constitution were to meet with political leaders in this vein, then people would doubt our knowledge of God, he said.
“These are things that they tell me that there is a tradition in such cases when there is a party, and the judge has or is seen to have any relation to that party, then he dissociates himself from that case.” I feel that Chandrachud Sahab should dissociate himself from it,” he said.
RJD leader and Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha said the independence of institutions must be considered. It’s a personal matter; it’s Ganpati puja, but you are taking a camera.” It is an uncomfortable message it sends. Chief Justice of India and Prime Minister are very tall personalities. And then if they agreed to put out these photographs into the public domain… what can we say?”
The Opposition’s criticism had been met sharply by the BJP. People who applaud, so to speak, the presence of Prime Ministers in Iftar parties, their guts twist and turn seeing the Prime Minister at the Ganesh Puja at Chief Justice’s home, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav said.
Those who laud and cheer hearing prime ministers speak at Iftars, the guts of whom are clutched and twisted when they see Prime Minister Narendra Modi perform Ganpati poojan at CJI DY Chandrachud’s residence.” The very fact that the executive and judiciary would pray before Gods who are revered by crores of devotees in India rather indicates the real strength of Indian secularism. He ended his day on X by saying ‘deal with it.’
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla challenged the opposition’s criticism, saying that then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh hosted then Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan at an Iftar party in 2009.
Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is about to retire on November 10. But Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das will hand over his mantle to Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the head of the Supreme Court.
