Judge Uday Umesh Lalit is an Indian Supreme Court justice who was born on November 9, 1957.
On August 10, 2022, President Droupadi Murmu named him Chief Justice of India.
On August 27, 2022, he will take the oath of office to become the 49th Chief Justice of India.
He worked as a senior attorney at the Supreme Court before being elevated to the position of judge.
One of the six senior attorneys who have been promoted directly to the Supreme Court is Justice Lalit.
After holding the position of Chief Justice of India for seventy-four days as the 49th chief justice,

Uday U Lalit was born into the family of U.R. Lalit, a senior advocate at the Supreme Court of India and a former additional judge of the Bombay High Court Nagpur bench.
He was born in the Maharashtra town of Solapur, the hometown of his family. When Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru visited Solapur, his grandpa Ranganath Lalit, a lawyer, presided over two different civic receptions.
He is wed to Amrita Lalit. He graduated from Mumbai’s Government Law College with a law degree.
In June 1983, Lalit registered as an advocate with the Maharashtra and Goa Bar Council.
He established his firm with lawyer M.A. Rane, who was regarded as a supporter of the radical humanism school of thought and who thought that developing a strong legal practice was equally crucial to social work.
In 1985, he relocated his business to Delhi and joined the firm of seasoned attorney Pravin H. Parekh.
Lalit collaborated with Soli Sorabjee, a former attorney general for India, from 1986 until 1992.
Lalit was admitted to practice law and enrolled with the Supreme Court as an Advocate-on-Record on May 3, 1992.
Lalit was appointed a senior Supreme Court attorney on April 29, 2004. Lalit was appointed as the special public prosecutor for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the 2G spectrum cases by a Supreme Court bench of Justices G. S. Singhvi and Asok Kumar Ganguly in 2011.
The court stated that Lalit’s appointment was “eminently suitable” in the interest of a fair prosecution of the case.
” Thoroughness with the case, patience in clarifying legal questions, and the sober demeanor in presenting the case before the bench” are listed as some of his professional skills.
His appointment as a judge on the Supreme Court was proposed in July 2014 by the Supreme Court collegium, which was led by the country’s then-Chief Justice of India, Rajendra Mal Lodha.
On August 13, 2014, he was appointed as a judge, making him just the sixth attorney to be directly elevated to the Supreme Court.
He was a member of the five-judge panel in the case against triple talaq in 2017, which was being used at the time by Indian Muslim men to divorce their wives by saying the word “talaq” (divorce) three times.
The practice was challenged as being unconstitutional. J S Khehar, Kurian Joseph, R F Nariman, and Abdul Nazeer all joined Lalit in delivering the decision outlawing the practice.
On January 10, 2019, Justice Lalit withdrew from the panel of five judges assembled to hear the Ayodhya dispute case.
Rajeev Dhavan informed the court of his appearance on behalf of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh in a “related case,” and the court noted in its order Justice Lalit’s “disinclination” to take part in the case. He has also withdrawn from numerous other prominent cases.
Along with Indu Malhotra, he was a member of the two-judge panel that maintained the Travancore royal family’s authority to rule over the Padmanabhaswamy Temple on July 13, 2020.
He was named the 49th Chief Justice of India on August 10, 2022, by President of India Draupadi Murmu.
On August 27, 2022, he will take over as India’s 49th Chief Justice. He would become India’s Chief Justice for the second time directly chosen from the Bar.
