CBI probe embezzlement case: Former RG Kar College Principal Appeals to SC against CBI Embezzlement Probe
Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital is the one who had appealed to the supreme court against the capacity of CBI for investigating the financial loss occurred in the institute. After issuing summons for alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where a resident doctor was recently raped and murdered the Calcutta High Court had on August 23 directed the CBI to conduct inquiry.
This led the Dr. Ghosh to approach higher court, the apex court that is.
The Supreme Court is in a process of hearing a suo motu case related to the alleged incident of rape and murder of a 31-year-old resident doctor that occurred on the August 9 when her lifeless body was found in a seminar hall. An autopsy conducted on the body confirmed that she was raped, and murdered.
This led to the protests throughout the country as doctors in several areas went for a strike asking for better laws and enforcement to protect doctors.
The Supreme Court had strictly criticised the State and also directed that after hearing a complaint of the doctors for inaction of the police in a case, CISF must take over the security of the hospital.
Significantly, Calcutta High Court was also dealing with the matter and had directly questioned the State as to whether there was any emergency or need of renovation near the places of crime.
It may be recalled that the High Court had transferred the case involving the murder to the CBI later on.
On the other hand Dr. Ghosh, who first left the post following the outrage. But the State soon re-appointed him to another college, namely, the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.
The Calcutta High Court had taken serious objection to the same and severely criticised the State for reappointment of Dr. Ghosh. After that Dr. Ghosh thought it wise to take long leave from the service.
On August 23 the High Court had also passed another order for CBI investigation into the alleged financial embezzlement in the college.
This was so after one Akhtar Ali, the ex Deputy Superintendent at RG Kar Hospital, went to the High Court lodging a complaint of serious unlawful deeds that Dr. Ghosh had undertaken when he was the principal of the college in question.
