Calcutta High Court requested CBI to investigate on social media on Rape and Murder of RG Kar lady

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to look into the pictures of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder victim which was spread via social media with obscene intentions.

Further, the Court was hearing a plea raising some obnoxious posts circulating in the social media platform on the victim.

When going through the so called posts marked by the petitioner through the counsel, a Bench of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice H Bhattacharyya raised a notice to the CBI.

As CBI has taken up the investigation they should see if something can be done. This happens when very nasty comments are written with picture of the victims. We will tell advocate we would like them to serve copies. You (CBI) examine. It will be possible to list the matter with other pleas. The announcement will be made on September 18 we shall hear.

The Court, at the starting itself, observed that all the proceedings regarding the rape and murder incident will be conducted on September 18, is the top court is hearing the suo motu case relating to it.

In the order made on August 20, we took an appeal and said:.. there are several people who post videos on Youtube. How will the State be regulating that? Is there any mechanism? the Court questioned.

The counsel for the petitioner argued that even after orders of the lower Court, the local police were not moving adequately to prevent such posts.

That is why people are putting abominable comments If this continues, the social fabric of the State will be affected, the counsel further said.

He also pointed out that they were now using posts on social media platforms to endanger a certain group of people and hence aggravating the effects of hatred.

The counsel said: “Only Muslim name is being used for the handler, he or she may actually exist or is fictitious.”

With regard to the same, the Court directed CBI to consider the matter and come up with the report during the next date of hearing.

More importantly, the Supreme Court had closely down an order to all the news and social media outlet to remove the name, photos, videos and any other information of the 31 resident doctor who died.
